Congratulations to our 2023 Nashman Outstanding Senior Awardees Rebecca Hammerman and Willow Newcomb!
The Human Services and Social Justice program is what brought Rebecca Hammerman to GWU. She has great passion for health equity and how it intersects with other issues that marginalized communities face. She has always learned to her greatest capacity when able to translate her work in the classroom to her work in the community. Her greatest accomplishments span from grant writing and program evaluations for organizations in the DC community. Outside of class, Rebecca is the Director of Kesem at GW, a nonprofit organization at serves children through and beyond their parent's cancer diagnosis. Rebecca has served six DC community-based organizations and made strong connections with their missions for a total of 500 hours during her time at GWU. Her next steps after graduation is to pursue a Masters in Public Administration at GWU while also pursuing a career in grassroots political organizing.
Willow Newcomb is a graduating senior double majoring in Political Science and Human Services & Social Justice. She is passionate about promoting social change and shaping public policy, specifically within migration and refugee politics. During her time at GW, she has been involved in our community at the grassroots level. Since her freshman year, she accrued more than 200 hours of service at local nonprofits: She wrote grants to support low-income Black mothers in DC, developed a research-based curriculum to teach students at a bilingual elementary school about mental health, conducted evaluations to help schools understand the impact of their tutoring programs, and taught middle schoolers how to do digital art. After her graduation from GW, Willow will continue her studies at Emory University where she will pursue a Master's in Development Practice. She will also continue her work at the United Nations where she currently serves as a Migration and Sustainable Development intern.
